Israel has a non-uniform society with a Jewish majority and dozens of religious streams represented. Israel’s designation as both a Jewish and a democratic state sometimes creates adverse situations affecting members of minority ethnic and religious groups.
We strongly believe that the state of Israel is the homeland for the Jewish people, but at the same time, it is also critically important to ensure that minority ethnic and religious groups in Israel receive the equal treatment described in Israel’s Declaration of Independence.
Jerusalem Institute of Justice’s legal aid department provides free of charge services and passionately protects the civil rights and religious freedoms of Christian and other communities under Israeli law. These rights are guaranteed to all the citizens of Israel; unfortunately, some minorities suffer discrimination and need our legal expertise and assistance. We support those who have experienced discrimination and help them establish their lives in Israel.
Our team has successfully handled over 1,300 cases similar to Oleg’s story dealing with issues such as family unification, affirmative action, immigration, and tax exemptions. We have won 25 Supreme Court petitions.
Even after all these cases and Supreme Court wins, we have more cases of discrimination to fight. There are many more people out there like Oleg that need help but can’t afford the fees required for fair legal representation.
